Some Wellingtonians might have been wondering who let the dogs out on Saturday as more than 500 people and their furry friends took to Wellington’s waterfront for The Big Dog Walk With Lots Of Dogs. The walk was the idea of stand-up comic Alice Brine who decided on a whim to create a Facebook event in January which quickly went viral. The Wellington walk spawned similar events, which were planned to run simultaneously on April 9 in Sydney and Auckland. Renee Newport, who helped organise the walk along with Brine, said the decision paid off. “It was a spur-of-the-moment idea. Alice created this Facebook page and within minutes it got a huge wind of interest.” “We are expecting around 1000 people to come along today, it’s amazing.”The event was a fantastic way to socialise with other dogs, she said. Participants were encouraged to donate a gold coin koha, which would go towards local animal charity, Helping You Help Animals (HUHA). Founder of HUHA Carolyn Press-McKenzie said all proceeds would help build a new shelter for their rescued animals. -
